Updated 13 October 2026

In short

You answer 24 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes and need 75%, which is 18 correct answers, to pass.

The format

24questions
45minutes
18correct to pass
75%pass mark

The test is taken on a computer at a test centre. Every question is based on the official handbook, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents.

Types of question

Tip: with "choose two" questions, check you have picked two before moving on. Picking only one counts as wrong.

Is 45 minutes enough?

For most people, yes. It works out at nearly two minutes a question, and many questions take a few seconds if you know the fact. Use spare time to go back over anything you were unsure about.

After the test

If you pass, you get a unique reference number. You need it for your settlement or citizenship application, and the Home Office uses it to check your result. If you do not pass, you can book again as many times as you need, but you pay for each attempt.

How to know you are ready

Take full practice exams under the same conditions: 24 questions, a 45-minute timer and no notes. If you are scoring 20 or more out of 24 across several different exams, you are in a good position.
