What to bring to the Life in the UK test

The ID you need for the Life in the UK test, what happens when you arrive, and the mistakes that mean you cannot sit the test.

Updated 13 October 2026

In short

Bring the same original ID you used to book. Copies and screenshots are not accepted, and without the right ID you cannot sit the test or get a refund.

The one thing you must bring

Bring the same ID you used to book the test, and bring the original, not a copy or a screenshot. The ID must have a photo that looks like you, and the name on it must exactly match your booking.

Accepted ID

Using a BRP or BRC? GOV.UK says you must take the test within 24 months of the expiry date printed on it, or before 31 December 2026, whichever comes first.

Mistakes that stop you sitting the test

If you bring the wrong ID, a copy instead of the original, or refuse to have your photo taken, you cannot take the test and you will not get a refund. Check your ID against your booking the night before.

The rules can change, so check the latest version on GOV.UK before your test.

Common questions

Can I use a photo of my passport?
No. You must bring the original ID you used to book. Copies and screenshots are not accepted.
Can I bring my children to the test centre?
No. You cannot bring children or other family members with you.
